About the Artist
Oil painting captured Claire's focus long before her teen years, when she altered the paint-by-numbers set she received for Christmas, and mixed the paints to suit herself. Born in Washington, D.C., but growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and visiting Santa Fe and Taos art galleries frequently with her amateur artist mother and art admirer dad, Claire was inspired to pursue a career as an artist. She thrived on the challenge to hone her skills with each passing year.
Commissioned portraits of her classmates in high school, for their parents, earned her money to pay the board bill on her horse. She and her friends participated in horse shows through the years, introducing her to new equine art collectors. Soon horses, dogs and other animals were the subject matter of more commissioned and freelance paintings.
In her early twenties Claire had the good fortune to receive, informally, critique and advice from her acquaintance with artists Arthur Sussman and Wilson Hurley. Claire adds, "Then, much later, in 1989, I took an oil painting workshop in Scottsdale, AZ, from CAA member Roy Andersen. That was another turning point, and a welcome learning experience."
Claire's diverse interests and subject matter for paintings today range from Lewis & Clark history to landscapes and water scenes, including fly-fishing, and wildflowers to wildlife, to cowboys and ranch life. She hopes to visit the Midwest and Eastern U.S. soon, looking for more painting inspiration.
